Growing up in South Carolina and showing a strong interest in visual art was not the most common path. Fortunately, I had a very supportive home- and a public school system that actually invested in the arts. So, naturally art school made the most sense upon high school graduation. I attended Winthrop University for a BFA in Visual Communication Design (graphic design) with a secondary interest in fine art (screen printing). Upon graduation I promptly left the South given the small amount of creative work to be had.

In 2004 I moved to Los Angeles and have worked as a print designer, independent curator, author for AMMO Books, RVCA, R77, OBEY Giant and Gagosian Gallery. I am also co-owner of the gallery THIS los angeles, in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

By Way of the South includes artists from all periods in my history as a creative youth, graphic designer, and curator. I find it to be a special thing to continue these relationships for this many years. Growing and working together on new endeavors has been a rewarding experience for all of us.

Sad News for Winthrop…Justin Van Hoy

Sad news for Winthrop…

Justin Van Hoy – the “Dutch Giant” – one of our most accomplished alumni of the VCOM-GD program, died.

Justin graduated from Winthrop in 2004, and soon moved west to Los Angeles.  He had an early association with Designer/Artist Shepard Fairey.  Justin opened his gallery in the Los Angeles area:  http://thislosangeles.com/ (currently featuring a show, Parentheses, with the works of Paul Martyka and Reed Elliott) and announced the publication of his book, Milk and Honey: Contemporary Art in California.

Quote from Chad Dresbach,  Chair, Department of DesignJustin Van Hoy at Winthrop University:

“I’m more than a bit shocked by this. Dutch was an excellent designer, a powerful thinker, and a good, reliable friend; he cared deeply about what he was doing, was generous to others, and he was always a strong supporter of the program. He had beat back cancer, twice, and went through a terrific amount of pain for someone so young.

Whether you knew Dutch or not, take a moment to realize ‘one of our own has fallen.’ The world is a much poorer place for the loss of Justin.”
